About ASD

NUMBER ONE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION

Message from Director - Mr Michael Breece

Welcome to ASD

The American School of Douala has provided excellence in education for the international and Cameroonian communities of Douala for over 40 years.

As our mission states, we are an international community of learners who are acquiring the skills needed to positively impact a rapidly changing world.  We value the international nature of our community with over 25 nationalities, which provides us with the opportunity to gain a rich understanding of cultures from across the globe.

We are also a community of learners meaning that it is not simply our students who are learners, but all members of our community, including teachers, parents, and staff.

We believe learning is a lifelong journey which is reflected in our vision statement: Inspiring lifelong curiosity to solve the challenges of tomorrow.

On this journey, we are acquiring skills that transcend traditional subjects such as Math, Science, English, and Social Studies. We focus on core values, including Global Citizenship, Critical Thinking, Curiosity, Confidence, Creativity, Resilience, Risk Taking, and Self-Awareness.

We believe that it is these core values that will equip all of us to positively impact those in our school community and the world beyond our walls.

The COVID-19 pandemic has underlined the fact that traditional school curricula will not fully prepare students for the unknown challenges ahead.

I am pleased that this crisis did not define our school, but instead served as an opportunity for our community to develop skills and dispositions that will be critical throughout our lives.

I applaud our school community for rising to the challenge and truly living our mission.

Why ASD?

The American School of Douala is fully accredited with the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA). MSA accreditation means that all aspects of the school meet high international standards, not only our academic program. ASD recently hosted a successful accreditation review in November 2017.

Our rigorous academic program is based on U.S. Common Core Standards. Our teachers design lessons that engage and motivate students, while helping them develop the critical thinking skills that they will need to be successful throughout their lives. We prepare students for the world that will exist after they graduate, not the world as it exists today.

01. We use best practices

We use research based best educational practices and innovative programs to deliver a quality college preparatory curriculum that meets rigorous educational standards. The School prepares students for admission to universities throughout Europe, the United States and Canada, and around the world.

06. Diverse extra-Curricular activities

The school offers diverse extra-curricular activities ranging from competitive sports to computer programming to dance and art. As a member of the West African International Schools Activities League (WAISAL), our sports teams have the opportunity to attend international tournaments as well as play locally.

05. Intimate learning experience

Class sizes are small, so students at ASD receive significant personal attention. The school year begins in mid-August and ends mid-June; the school day runs from 7:50 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. ASD provides quality classroom instruction and serves pre-kindergarten through grade 12 students.

02. Diversity & Multiculturalism

ASD provides a multicultural educational environment, where students will learn to be competitive, self-confident, compassionate, and contribute positively to our global community. They will develop an appreciation for learning as a lifelong process.

03. Local and Global Community

ASD welcomes both Cameroonian and international students from all religious and cultural backgrounds. Support is provided for English language learners. The school is home to students from more than 30 nations across the globe.

04. Globally respected certifications

Graduates of ASD have distinct advantages. As a fully accredited American School, ASD graduates receive an American high school diploma just as if they graduated from a school in the U.S. They can apply to universities in the U.S., Canada, France, or elsewhere with the benefit of having received a solid English-language education.

ASD Community

ASD is a richly diverse and multicultural community. Our students and teachers come from over 30 different countries and represent every populated continent. We enjoy a dynamic and stimulating blend of cultures, faiths, nationalities, and languages, and strive to promote internationalism while respecting and preserving each individual’s identity.

We actively seek out and employ highly qualified, certified, experienced, and culturally diverse teachers. Most of our teachers hold advanced degrees and are experienced in international school settings. ASD provides regular professional development in curriculum, best practice, and creative teaching approaches for all teachers.

Our PTA is enthusiastic and very active in supporting school events. It’s a great opportunity for parents to meet each other and make a difference in their children’s educational experience. Some of the events organized by the PTA include Book-o-Ween, Family Fun Day, the School Store, and the International Day feast. The PTA also helps subsidize school field trips and sporting events.

Cameroon is situated near the equator on the Atlantic Ocean, and has a tropical climate. There are black and gold sandy beaches, an active volcano, scenic waterfalls, banana, palm, and rubber plantations, and tropical rainforests. Douala is the major industrial port of sub-Saharan West Africa; the capital, Yaounde, is only a 40 minute flight away.

The international airport in Douala offers direct flights to Europe and other parts of the world.
